Last week, an Australian judge handed down the first verdict in a high-profile, continent-spanning legal feud that pits Rebel Wilson against the producers and star of her directorial debut, “The Deb.” The ruling marked a win for the “Pitch Perfect” actress, but the war is far from over as a related and far more explosive case heads to court in Los Angeles. 6 “The Deb” producer Amanda Ghost, along with her husband and fellow producer Gregor Cameron, have sued Rebel Wilson. REUTERS Back in 2024, Wilson went scorched earth in a series of Instagram posts that continued into the following year. At first, she claimed that married producers Amanda Ghost and Gregor Cameron embezzled funds from “The Deb” and accused Ghost of “inappropriate behavior towards” the film’s star, Charlotte MacInnes — a claim that the young actress denied. Ghost and Cameron sued Wilson for defamation in Los Angeles, claiming that the “Bridesmaids” star invented a MeToo story to leverage a screenwriting credit. Wilson doubled down and targeted MacInnes on social media, suggesting that she was denying any sexual misconduct in order to get a leg up on her career. That prompted MacInnes to sue Wilson in Australia. The case Down Under just concluded, with Justice Elizabeth Raper dismissing MacInnes’ claim, ruling the posts were not defamatory. In Australia, defamation cases are decided by a judge and not a jury. Ghost and Cameron are being represented by attorney Camille Vasquez , who famously helped Johnny Depp prevail in his defamation case against Amber Heard . Vasquez has included several familiar Hollywood players in the Wilson case, namely attorney Bryan Freedman , TAG PR founder Melissa Nathan and digital consultant Jed Wallace . Wilson, Nathan and TAG PR are defendants, while Freedman and Wallace are name-checked throughout the legal filings. Getty Images The trio were also embroiled in the Blake Lively – Justin Baldoni legal war as Baldoni’s reps. So far, Vasquez has potentially found better luck than Lively’s attorneys, who targeted the same Freedman-Nathan-Wallace axis for allegedly mounting an untraceable smear campaign against the “Gossip Girl” actress. (After Lively’s case was gutted with only three claims remaining, she settled with nemesis Baldoni in a legal detente where no money changed hands.) The Wilson case appears to be a different matter. In January, Judge Thomas Long OK’d Vasquez’s request to take a deposition and subpoena documents related to websites that called Ghost the “Indian Ghislaine Maxwell” who was a “pimp” gathering women “for the pleasure of the extremely wealthy.” Legal filings make clear that Vasquez believes Wilson ordered the trio to create the sites, and discovery is expected to be very interesting. (By contrast, no similar smear sites targeting Lively ever popped up, which might explain why a federal judge seemed unimpressed by her claim that she was targeted thusly.) Freedman, who no longer represents Wilson, says neither he nor Nathan and Wallace created the sites. 6 Power attorney Bryan Freedman is Wilson’s former lawyer. But during the Aussie trial, she was presented with metadata that showed her Camp Sugar production company was one of the authors. Wilson told the court, “I can’t explain that.” Vazquez has also been involved in another recent high-profile Hollywood case that appears to be less promising. Her client, famed “Simpsons” composer Danny Elfman, has suffered a series of blows in his legal battle against pianist Nomi Abadi , who accused him of sexual misconduct and is suing him for defamation over his on-the-record denial in a Rolling Stone investigative piece. In May, a California Court of Appeal ruled that Elfman cannot dismiss Abadi’s defamation suit, and the case appears to be headed to court. Then, last week, Elfman dropped his countersuit for fraudulent concealment against Abadi. 6 Vazquez successfully represented Johnny Depp in his defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard, POOL/AFP via Getty Images Says Abadi’s lawyer Deb Drooz : “Ms. Abadi is more than gratified that she will finally be able to tell her story to the trial court and ultimately to a jury.” Vasquez tells Page Six Hollywood: “The truth is often stranger than fiction.
