At 17 years old, Springfield was entertaining U.S. troops near Da Nang when the base came under attack. The singer recalled dropping mortars down a launcher tube during the attack and was informed the following day that he had killed someone. Springfield expressed lasting remorse over the experience, stating it remains hard to face being responsible for the end of a life. The Jessie's Girl singer previously addressed the traumatic incident in his 2010 memoir, Late, Late at Night.
