There will be significantly tougher games ahead for Arsenal , but all indications from this one would suggest complacency will not be among any shortcomings in their defence of the title. This was vicious and savage and effective in all the right ways. Had the Micky Quinn of 1993 been summoned by Coventry City, chances are he would have been dumped on his backside along with the rest of Frank Lampard ’s men. Naturally, there should be no rushes to judgment about what it all means, except to say that Mikel Arteta ’s side kicked off this Premier League campaign by delivering on his two prime aims – a win and zero loose ends to offer comfort for those giving chase. In the broad brushstrokes, the victory was secured with goals by Kai Havertz , Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard , but the detail is more important. For one, Christos Tzolis. There are Norwich fans out there who might have seen a carthorse in their Greek winger all those years ago; Trojan horse might have been closer to the mark. Playing his first fixture in this division since 2022, Arsenal’s £33million signing from Brugge excelled here. Sure, he faded in the second half, but by then he had pummelled Coventry’s backline from his spot on the left. In the broad brushstrokes, the victory was secured with goals by Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard Arteta will have been left satisfied by his side's dominance on both flanks, as well as the performances of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard ad the Micky Quinn of 1993 been summoned by Coventry City, chances are he would have been dumped on his backside along with the rest of Frank Lampard ’s men The relevance there is clear, because if he sustains that level, Arsenal will pose a major problem on both flanks. That will cause Arteta great satisfaction, and so too the performances of Saka and Martin Odegaard. One was a menace, the other a conductor, and together they performed different brands of torment on a team of giants. Ran rings around them, actually. The perspective here is obvious – it was Coventry. It was at home. But it was also a party continued and one not dampened by the news earlier in the day that Bruno Guimaraes might miss a couple of weeks with a minor injury. Prior to kick-off, there were fireworks in the sky, a brass band on the street and banners on each wall to remind visitors that champions reside at the Emirates Stadium. All of which might have been tolerable for Coventry were it not for the one-sided beating that followed. For Lampard, this was a rough return to the big show. At the very least, he won’t be accused of discarding those who made the ascension possible. Or not immediately, anyway. Of the 11 he chose for this first top-flight gig in quarter of a century, eight were part of the promotion campaign, with Caleb Yirenkyi, Loum Tchaouna and Aurele Amenda blended in from their £130million spree. That was one point of consistency for Coventry. Another was their physicality – big lads got them up and big lads will try to keep them up, because no fewer than seven of Lampard’s side here measured in excess of 6ft and, lest we forget, he oversaw more goals from set-pieces than Arteta last season. All of which meant there was momentary curiosity when Coventry won a corner inside 30 seconds. That it didn’t clear Riccardo Calafiori at the near post was a bad sign. From there, they suffered something of a death by a thousand short passes. Arsenal were fast, ambitious and unpredictable, and through Tzolis and Saka they owned both wings. Tougher assignments are needed for a fuller judgment on Tzolis, but the manner with which he shredded Coventry’s right back Milan van Ewijk is promising for those who felt earlier versions of Arteta’s sides were lopsided. It was, in fact, Tzolis who had Arsenal’s first chance, which he lifted over the bar after a rapid counter led by Saka and Odegaard. He was then involved in the second, spawned from a new short corner routine that favoured a ground strike over an aerial assault – Saka, Ben White and Myles Lewis-Skelley worked to a clever script before Tzolis’s shot was blocked at the end of the move. Playing his first fixture in this division since 2022, Arsenal’s £33m signing from Brugge starred Prior to kick-off, there were fireworks in the sky, a brass band on the street and banners on each wall to remind visitors that champions reside at the Emirates Stadium By this stage, we should add a detail – Odegaard, mostly stationed at No10, where we would also expect him to play once Guimaraes is fit, was conducting the music, just as he did in the Community Shield. With Declan Rice and Lewis-Skelly behind him in a 4-2-3-1, the unit danced around Coventry’s big men in the middle. If there was a surprise, it is that the control only yielded two goals in the first half. The opener, converted by Havertz after quarter of an hour, traced to Tzolis winning his duel with Van Ewijk for a high ball, before Calafiori threaded a quick, low delivery to the German. Havertz’s finish would suggest an early upper hand in his mini-battle with Viktor Gyokeres for the striking spot. The move for 2-0 came in the 23rd minute, when Rice and Odegaard led the surge and Carl Rushworth redirected Tzolis’s cross to the feet of Saka. He buried it. Lampard made no changes at the break and nor were there any changes to the pattern of play. Arsenal continued to swarm, Coventry continued to grapple at thin air, and within minutes a two-goal lead was up to three. Again, it was conducted at speed, this time with Rice and Saka orchestrating the angles for a Ben White overlap before Odegaard scuffed the ugliest of finishes past Rushworth. The VAR investigated an offside against White but backed off pretty quickly. A theme to note in that move was the innate understanding in space and movement between White and Saka – it has carried over from the title-winning season. So has the swagger. Arsenal are up and running.
